Day 39: Isaiah 45:12
Devotional
READ ISAIAH 45:12
Buying a house brought a lot of new things into our lives as a married couple. It gave us a place to host and build a home. It gave us a financial investment to steward well. And it also tripled our to-do list with the amount of house projects that come up every week. These impromptu projects always become learning opportunities for me, but fortunately, I am not the only one who is looking to learn something new.
Go to any bookstore, and you will find an entire section filled with how-to books on every subject imaginable: cooking, woodworking, gardening, and painting. YouTube even offers step-by-step videos to help you tackle any problem you might face. It seems like anyone can become an expert and post their own solutions to the internet. This over-saturation of “experts” goes well beyond just house projects and recipes…. It also has jumped into the discussions of philosophy and life itself.
Every day we become a day older than we were yesterday. And with each passing decade, we enter new phases of life we’ve never encountered before. We are constantly learning…but who are we learning from? Bookshelves, social media, and the internet are full of experts that tell us how to get the most out of life.
God’s word tells us that, by nature, we are imitators. The problem is that we are often imitating the wrong person—someone other than the Creator of the universe. As I meditate on this verse today, I am reminded that, by His own hand, God created everything. He knows more about us than we will ever know. He wove our DNA by hand in the womb. And He holds all the authority in the world. Going through life without God’s word is like building a piece of furniture but throwing away the instructions before we even start.
In a world full of voices telling us the secrets to abundant life, we have to be careful to ensure that our foundation is built upon the voice of the one who created life itself. The voices that we choose to listen to often become what we imitate.

Personal Reflection
- Who are you seeking to imitate?
- What areas of life are you trying to navigate on your own?
- How can you seek to learn from God’s word and apply it this week?

Always good to be reminded that our source of truth is God and His word. Lots of voices trying to get my attention. It’s too easy try to make this happen on my own.
