A Devo From Scot - Psalm 103

Dear Church,

Since the beginning of our COVID misadventure, we’ve been intentionally walking through the Psalms in a continued effort to tend our heart, tuning it to God’s voice as found in God’s Word. Today we come to a psalm that, to be frank, defies commentary. I find that my words continue to fail in description, introduction or application. But I’ll try nonetheless. You can sympathize with me by reading Psalm 103 for yourself. Once will not be enough.

It begins and ends with a command: "Bless the LORD, O my soul." David is teaching himself. He’s speaking to his own soul. Psalm 104, likely written by someone else, begins the same way. But Psalm 103 has a vim and vigor that, at least in my mind, puts it in a class of its own.

My simple prayer for you today is that you engage this selection of God’s inspired Word. Linger over its content. Let the words wash over your soul and speak life to your heart. You won’t have to work hard at this. As you do so, revel in the unexpected grace of God, available to all through faith in Jesus. David writes a memorable phrase in Psalm 103 about God’s grace. He borrows Moses’ words and then adds his own.

“The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness. He will not always strive with us [keep tension], nor will He keep His anger forever. He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His lovingkindness toward those who fear Him. As far as the east is from the west, so far as He removed our transgressions from us.”

Bask in the undeserved glory of these gifts. Jesus won them all for you.

I love you church.
