Spiritual Drift

For this reason, we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it. 2 For if the word spoken through angels proved unalterable, and every transgression and disobedience received a just penalty, 3 how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? After it was at the first spoken through the Lord, it was confirmed to us by those who heard, 4 God also testifying with them, both by signs and wonders and by various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit according to His own will.—Hebrews 2:1–4, NASB 95

Drift is the slow, continuous movement from one location to another, which is never good. We don’t drift into a better place. Positive movement requires clarity and intentionality; we neglect that truth at our peril. In this series, we have used the graphic below to illustrate the importance of clarity and intentionality in avoiding drift:

Discussion Questions

1. Describe a time when someone gave you a warning that you didn’t pay much attention to. What happened?
2. Read Acts 7:53, Galatians 3:19, and Deuteronomy 33:2. According to Jewish tradition, the law came to Moses through angels—and look what happened when the people ignored that. What will happen if they refuse to listen to Jesus - something even more important and powerful?
3. According to Hebrews 2:1–4, what different ways was the message of salvation in Christ emphasized?
4. How does this compare with the message that came through angels?
5. What evidence is there in your life and your group that the message of Jesus is true and powerful?
6. Examining the graphic above, where would you place your life now? What steps are you taking to live with clarity and intentionality?

Dig Deeper: Drifters

Read James 1:22-25. The book of Hebrews calls readers to pay attention to the truth they have heard so they won’t drift away into false teachings. How do Christians drift away?

- We may become careless or complacent in our devotion to Christ.
- We may return to the sin we formerly had rejected.
- We may compromise our morals and disobey Christ’s teaching.
- We may neglect Christian service and thus become inactive Christians.

The currents of temptation pull strongly at Christians. To resist, we must pay attention to Christ. Listening to Him means not merely hearing but also obeying and taking action on what God calls us to do, and we should never do it alone.
