A Devo From Scot - Psalm 91

Dear Church,

Earlier this week we looked at the ancient prayer of Moses in Psalm 90, and my heart will not allow me to skip the next one. Psalm 91, to which I invite you today, is simply too beautiful to dismiss in our slow saunter through this ancient collection of worship songs. Take some time to read it today. I hope you read it through multiple times. As you do, you will likely recognize its memorable, poetic language and even recall some of the life and words of Jesus.

The heart of Psalm 91 is a rare truth of God’s grace: there is safety in intimacy. Yeah, if you haven’t already, you might want to read that last line again to be sure you understood it correctly. There is safety in intimacy? Really? If you’ve gone through the intense pain of a divorce or a break up or the death of a loved one, you might disagree. Sharply.

But consider the opening words of Psalm 91, written about intimacy with a faithful, present, eternal Father. “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.” Consider the names of God used and where they are used. The first line, which refers to Father as “Most High” is an open invitation to intimacy and nearness. We can make God Most High our refuge. We are constantly invited. When we do, we will continue in “the shadow of the Almighty.” This is a picture of protection and safety. The name used here is “Almighty” to drive home the strength available in our chosen Refuge.

So yes, while human intimacy is a gift from God that often leads to pain from sin or loss, intimacy with God - through faithful obedience and acceptance of who you are in Jesus Christ - is the doorway to protection, security and safety rooted in God’s perfect character and will. The more you read in Psalm 91, the more this truth is reinforced and applied. Read on. You’ll see. I dare you.

As you do, allow your heart to confidently approach the Living God who calls you His daughter/son because of your faith in Jesus. As you approach, rest in the shadow of His infinite protection - which will one day be perfect and complete in the absence of sin.
