A Devo From Scot - Psalm 96

Dear Church,

Today is the beginning of something new. It may simply be a new week, but it could be much more than that. It could be a fresh new start to a whole new “season.” In this COVID era, we tend to wake up and imagine that today and tomorrow will just be more of the same. But that does not have to be true. The universe God intricately designed brings good out of what we call “bad.” Think about it. Volcanic eruptions are a critical part of the carbon cycle, refreshing the earth. Forest fires help make new growth flourish. Every seed planted must die before it creates new life.

I’m not suggesting any of this is easy. I’m reminding you it’s possible. More than that, it’s part of God’s plan. So I want you to begin praying, right now, for NEW. That’s how Psalm 96 begins. “Sing to the LORD a new song.” I invite you to read this psalm today, hopefully a few times. It’s short.

Notice the NEW content the author brings to his song. It involves past, present and future. He focuses on God’s character and actions. His heart seems to stand up instead of cowering down. His soul rises. His head is lifted. He is inviting the NEW. He is praying and singing for the NEW.

I invite you today, the first day of a new week, to begin praying for a new season. Ask God to bring new growth, new passion, new relationships, new life to old relationships, new intimacy with Him, new vitality in your body, new mercies for His church, new life, new hope, new love, new compassion, new vision, new mission. Let your heart run free in this prayer. It wants to. Let the words of Psalm 96 be a guide. If that beautiful Psalm is not enough, skip over to Psalm 98. It's a new version.

I love you church. Let’s walk into the new together.
