Traveling with Patience: Discovering the Power of the Holy Spirit
By Jesse Marcos, Missions Pastor
Summer is upon us and that can mean only one thing - travel! It is estimated that 42.3 million Americans will travel fifty miles or more from home this weekend. With so many of us traveling, traffic jams and flight delays are inevitable. We better pack some patience as we deal with the challenges this can present.
I recall many years ago traveling with our children and being stuck in a massive traffic jam that would delay our arrival at our destination. The longer we sat there, the more I realized my patience was wearing thin. In the background was music my children enjoyed as we traveled. At that point, a song came on with these words, “Have patience, don’t be in such a hurry, when you get impatient you only start to worry.” Wow, can you say "convicted?"
In the book of Galatians Paul reminds us of the fruit of the Spirit, Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, and Faithfulness. There’s our word, Patience! When Jesus tells His disciples in John 14:15-17 that He’s leaving but sending them a Helper, that Helper is the Holy Spirit.
In verse 16 Jesus tells them that The Spirit will dwell with them and will be in them. Are you fully grasping what Jesus is saying here? The Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity, who is God himself dwells within you. He not only deals with us in traffic jams, but He's with us as we deal with relationships with our spouse, children, and coworkers.
As we look forward to our summer travels and getting that long-awaited R&R, make sure you remember that God himself lives within you, and desires you to walk daily with Him. As we do that we’ll not only exhibit Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, and Faithfulness, but we’ll show the world around us that we are His disciples.
