Day 34: Revelation 4:11

Devotional

READ REVELATION 4:11

Revelation 4 reveals an incredible scene. If you haven’t read the whole chapter, I would encourage you to do that right now. It is an amazing picture, and John is trying to describe in words what God showed him.  I’ll give you a couple of descriptions of what’s happening.
Before the throne of God is “something like a sea of glass, like crystal”. Imagine the ground as you walk up to the throne.  It’s clear, like a diamond, sparkling and reflecting the light of God. Lightning and thunder are flashing and rumbling; burning lamps of fire are before the throne; and these awesome heavenly creatures are surrounding the throne singing “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, the almighty”. Wow! Then, the elders around the throne are worshipping him and laying their crowns at the feet of God saying, “Worthy are you”.

For me, this description of worship leads me to a question: “What does my worship look like?” A simple definition of worship is “acknowledging God for who He is and what he has done.” The heavenly creatures and the elders worship God because he is worthy. He alone created all things and is worthy to receive glory and honor and power. How am I worshipping the God of creation?  When I reflect on this, a song from a couple of decades ago comes to mind about my own worship.

“When the music fades and all is stripped away. Longing just to bring something that’s of worth that will bless your heart. I’m coming back to the heart of worship and it’s all about you. I’m sorry, Lord, for the thing I’ve made it. It’s all about you.”

Genesis 1:1 says, “in the beginning God”!  Those words should register with us. They should stick with us. He alone is worthy of our praise. I want to acknowledge God for what he has done in my life because I believe he is worthy of my worship. I want to acknowledge him by spending time in His word.  I want to acknowledge him by reflecting his character in my life. I want to acknowledge him by serving others, telling others about him, and so many other ways. My desire is to live a life that reflects how much I love Jesus for what he has done in my life. How will you worship the Lord of all creation today?

Personal Reflection

  • The elders in heaven cast their crowns before God as a sign of worship. Are there things in your life that you can lay before God as an act of worship? How do you think that can deepen your fellowship with Him?
  • How does acknowledging God’s role as Creator shape our sense of gratitude? What specific areas of your life can you begin to thank God for more intentionally?
  • What does it mean for God to be "worthy" of glory, honor, and power?  How can we practically show this in our daily lives?

My mind jumped immediately to a song also, Chad: The Revelation Song. “Holy, holy, holy….” https://youtu.be/8-Gxjtd6Wp4?si=wMxBZtfREdTjKIJz

Worthy of our worship indeed. We will lay it all at the feet of the one who created everything. Great reminder to keep this top of mind today.
